What Equipment Do I Need for DTF Printing?

DTF is direct-to-film printing involving the transfer of design from one medium to another. It requires a printer, specific PET film, inks, a conveyor dryer, and a heat-press machine. Each DTF printing equipment plays a specific role in the process. If you want to start a DTF business, you should know what things are needed and how to use the machine and supplies.

Let’s break down the DTF process for the convenience of understanding

1. DTF Printer

It is like a regular printer, but it prints on PET film. The DTF process starts with printing a design on specific films. Epson, Roland BY-20, Ricoh RI2000, and STS are some of the leading printers in the market. They feature large ink tanks and multiple printheads with exceptional white ink capability. They pack RIP software for better color management, an auto-cleaning system, and intuitive touch controls. You can buy a DTF printer according to your print needs and budget.

2. PET Film

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film serves as a medium for transferring ink to the fabric. These films can withstand the high heat and pressure employed during design transfer. They are classified into Hot Peel and Cold Peel.

Hot Peel: The film is peeled when hot. It gives a matte finish and minimizes the risk of creasing or smudging.

Cold Peel: The film is allowed to cool before peeling. It provides better ink adhesion and is suitable for complex designs.

3. DTF Inks

DTF inks are specially formulated for flexibility and durability. They give sharp and vibrant prints that last long. The printed designs show no sign of exhaustion, like fading or cracking. Users are advised to buy only high-quality pigment inks compatible with their printers. For example, some printer brands suggest using branded inks only. However, many printers support third-party inks. You should check the ink compatibility of DTF printing equipment.

4. Adhesive Powder (Hot Melt)

The printed design is treated with an adhesive powder that melts on coming into contact with high heat. The adhesive strengthens the bond between the ink and fabric. When the printed PET film is applied to the garment, the adhesive allows the ink to set decently over the textile. However, the quality of the result achieved largely depends on the quality of the adhesive powder and how it is cured.

5. Conveyor Dryer

A curing oven or conveyor dryer is needed to cure the adhesive powder. It is especially important for high-volume print jobs, where you can’t take chances. When you work on batch printing jobs, you need perfection at every step. However, beginners can use a heat-press machine to cure the hot melt adhesive. If you are starting a small home-based printing business, you won’t need a conveyor dryer.

6. Heat Press Machine

A good heat press machine is an important DTF printing equipment. It produces high heat to melt the adhesive powder and generates immense pressure to transfer the design from the PET film to the garment. Endura, Geo Knight, Insta, and Uninet are some of the leading heat press brands in the market.
